Air Serbia environment

In Air Serbia, we take special care for the environment, being a responsible carrier towards the climate and world ecosystem.

To reduce carbon emissions, we are implementing initiatives for efficient energy consumption. The set of measures we are taking include recycling waste, optimization of pilot procedures, changes in ground operations, aircraft maintenance and aircraft weight reductions. For tracking the efficiencies made, we use different tools and processes like fuel consumption monitoring system, that has enabled us to have a detailed insight into performance during aircraft movement on the airport surfaces, climbing, cruising and optimization of landing phase.

For us, even small improvement counts. During 2019, with our optimization efforts, we have managed to reduce near to three thousand tons of carbon dioxide.

Our target is to continue to be an active member of the Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation and to focus our efforts towards the more sustainable operations aiming for carbon-neutral growth from 2020.

We improve our environmental footprint: by improving our operations, introduce recycling initiatives, engage our employees and work with government institutions

  • Pilot Activites

Pilots are the main actors in improving fuel efficiency, since a lot of initiative to reduce CO2 emission must be applied during flights.

  • Lighter Aircraft

As our ultimate goal is to reduce C02 emissions we are dedicated toward weight efficiency of our fleet.

  • Engine Wash

Clean engine represents one of the key factors in protecting the environment.

  • Flight Plan Optimization

Our teams are continually working on flight plan optimization.

  • Reporting of CO2 emission

Our emitted CO2 is within allowance regarding number of operated flights for 3 previous years

  • Facility Management

We are constantly working on improving our property management, maintenance and hygiene.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel Efficiency

We constantly invest in Fuel Efficiency. This includes flight planning, weight reduction, engine wash and pilot activities. Fuel consumption has declined by 13% since 2014.

CO2 Emissions Savings

In our effort to reduce carbon emissions and to continue savings, we joined SkyBreathe community in June 2020. This is important step towards more sustainable future aviation. SkyBreathe community represents group of airlines who uses special software tool in order to preserve our environment. This software uses, combines and manipulates with various data sources all toward the optimization of the operation and as a final product toward carbon emission reduction.

  • 1. Pilot Fuel Saving Activities

Our Flight crew members are constantly looking for the opportunity to reduce harmful impact on our environment by applying the best fuel saving practices, such as Single Engine Taxi Operations, Continuous Descent Approach, Reduce Flaps settings, Avoid using full reverse thrust, minimize APU usage on ground, and much more. That’s why we are putting special focus on pilots best practices in order to improve environment preservation to a much higher level.

  • 2. Paperless cockpit

Towards the reduction of aircraft weight, printed pages and to preserve our environment, we achieved to remove the excess paper from our cockpits by providing our flight crew with the tablets.

  • 3. Flight plan optimization

Our Flight Operation and NOC engineers are continually working on the improvement of the flight plan and are always looking for the optimal route selection.

  • 4. Modern slim seats

Once again we are dedicated toward the lower CO2 emission by reducing the weight of our aircraft. That is why we have equipped our narrow-body Airbus fleet with modern thinner seats, which are light in weight and designed to take up less space, while at the same time improving the overall living space and comfort for passengers.

  • 5. Single Engine Taxi Operations

Our flight crew is saving fuel during aircraft ground movement, by the late start of one engine before takeoff and by turning off one engine after landing.
By applying Single Engine Taxi Operations, we managed without fuel savings information to reduce CO2 emission for about 980,000 kg.

  • 6. Engine wash

Our technical department takes special care of the very heart of the aircraft, not just by maintaining them, but also by washing them regularly, which improve their efficiency.

  • 7. Potable water optimization

Constant optimization of potable water policy in order to avoid excessive potable water load, higher fuel consumption and CO2 emission.

  • 8. ELEVATE Magazine

In order to preserve our environment, we have reduced the format in which we print our magazine, which is distributed on airplanes.

  • 9. Prioritizing Ground Power Unit over Auxiliary Power Unit

By using electrical power unit (GPU), where available, instead of APU, we are reducing the use of APU and fuel consumption for up to 180 kg per hour.

CO2 Emission

Reporting and alignment of CO2 emission

Since 2013, Air Serbia has been actively participating in the European Union process for trade in greenhouse gas emissions, better known as the EU ETS. The process includes monitoring of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per flight in the territory of the European Union, annual reporting, and verification of flight data by an authorized verifier. For 2019, Air Serbia was within allowance regarding CO2 emissions standards.

Our company has become a participant in ICAO's CORSIA since 2019 (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) process. Through this process, the company reports to regulatory authorities on the total CO2 emissions for all flights performed on an annual basis. Goal of this process is carbon neutral growth from 2020 onwards.

Recycle waste

Recycle waste

Recycle waste

Since 2018 new initiatives are implemented regarding waste management, which include sorting waste into different streams at our corporative, operational and administrative locations. Air Serbia and its subsidiaries continue with general waste management activities, in accordance with law regulative and best ecological practices. Further activities regarding compliance with legal legislature brought to full implementation of wastewater management in Air Serbia catering facilities, and the result was obtaining the permanent water licenses issued by certificated state authorities.

Contractor Management

Contractor Management

In accordance with regulations on health and safety at work, fire protection and environmental protection (HSE) at Air Serbia, the contractor management procedure is established and it sets minimum requirements to ensure control and elimination of risks that occur during the work of a contractor/subcontractor, both at the Company's facilities and outside them. Through the contractor management procedure and the qualification of contractors, Air Serbia motivates hundreds of small and medium-sized enterprises to apply appropriate HSE measures. In this way, Air Serbia directly contributes to the fulfilment of legal obligations and good HSE practice by a large number of businesses in the Republic of Serbia, positioning it among socially responsible companies with positive HSE and business practices.

Use of lights

Use of lights

Lighting management

Everyday activities contribute to saving electricity and extending the life of light bulbs. In rooms that are not in constant use (meeting rooms, toilets, etc.), the lights are turned off, and turned on only when necessary. In this way, we contribute to the preservation of the environment, but also to saving electricity. We have also started installing LED bulbs at our facilities.

Use of air conditioning and ventilation systems

Use of air conditioning and ventilation systems

During indoor work at Air Serbia, air conditioners are used so that the difference between outdoor and indoor temperature does not exceed 8 ° C. If there is a need to ventilate the space by opening the windows, the air conditioners are switched off beforehand. Air conditioners and their filters are regularly maintained, cleaned and disinfected in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

Printing and its environmental impact

Printing and its environmental impact

Reduce printing is a permanent, long-term process in Air Serbia, where every department is aiming to reduce the usage of paper. Over the past few years, we had been scanning paper documents making electronic versions, also enabling online templates for digitalizing our business processes.
