An unusual city on the Vardar river is famous for its unique combination of old and new. Different styles and epochs are mixed in the city center. At first glance, the antique city core has been completely renovated only recently, with marks of various civilizations that in the past ruled the Macedonia, and whose heritage is honored by the “Skopje 2014” project. Not far from the new-old Skopje downtown, the authentic Stara Čaršija is situated, with Byzantine and Ottoman elements that better reflect the traditional life in the former capital of Serbian and Bulgarian Emperors. As a witness of the former significance of Skopje, a fortress is dominating the city, which is more than a thousand years old, with two museums preserving important archaeological remains.
